Tree Gardens with Daffodils
There's no tree here, but it is one of my gardens that now, in early summer, hides the bulb foliage. This week's article is on Tree Gardens, and is the second of a three article feature series titled "Three Gardens" with a new bulb garden each week featuring daffodils. You want to personalize your gardens! Go ahead, it's easy and it fun to design a personal garden to enhance your home. The key to having a eye pleasing bulb display is to plant bulbs in "clumps" and to mix and match colors. As was said last week, for tree gardens use bulbs with different heights and that bloom at different times to make the garden last a long time. Taller bulbs should be planted closest to the tree to avoid both hiding them from view, and having the taller flowers falling down over the lawn. To start, form a rough six feet in diameter circle under your tree, with the tree trunk in the center. Plant the bulbs on all sides of the tree. Symmetrical planting on all four sides will give a dual spectacular display, but may be a little boring. The list of bulbs below will provide for a planting that will brighten up the tree, and at the same time help refresh the tree's root system with good soil, fertilizer and nutrients. Some trees, like Silver Maples that have a shallow root system can become an aggravation for a tree garden, but the principle still works. Prepare the bed well, dug to at least 8 inches deep and mix in a high percentage of organic matter, and decomposed manure. If the digging is hard to accomplish because of the tree roots, build up the soil with mostly organic matter and mulch until you get the right depth. Be sure not to pile soil against the base of the tree trunk, however light mulch to level the top of the piled-up area may be used. The Tree Garden A tree garden is the best way to accent that old tree in your back yard. It works well on your Dogwood, or Oak or other deciduous trees, however don't try this on a coniferous or evergreen tree as the bulb will lose vigor over years and stop producing. The list of bulbs listed below will provide a spectacular view of that old tree!
