My Garden, 1st Week in April

© Clay Higgins

The National Convention, and Daffodils blooming in my garden the 1st week in April, 2000.

This is the week that I return home from the American Daffodil Society National Convention in Portland, OR, which was from March 30th to April 3rd, in the year 2000. I took just about everything to the show that was in bloom in my garden, however, it wasn't enough. I didn't have the horses (daffodils - if you will) to compete.

The most I had was a few trumpets and some red/orange cupped classes of daffodils. The first picture is the collection of five trumpet daffodils that I entered at the National Show, and was awarded the blue ribbon. This and the next picture was the extent of my garden this first week in April, 2000.

In my area of Maryland the daffodils are early, however, because I planted my beds late last fall/winter my daffodils are late. The daffodils in the first picture are 'Baradoc' 1Y-Y front left; 'Comal' 1Y-Y front right; 'Uncle Duncan' 1Y-O back left; 'Corbiere' 1Y-Y00 back center; and 'Tyrone Gold' 1Y-Y back right.

'Comal' and 'Baradoc' are both yellow trumpets from Australia. They are both big trumpets that make both good garden flowers and excellent show flowers. 'Comal' is the more common of the two and should be commercially available in the near future. 'Uncle Duncan' was bred by John Pearson, Hofflands Daffodils in England. It is a terrific propagator, and should be available for a garden flower in short notice. 'Corbiere' is an introduction from the late Sir John Lea of England, and has made slow acceptance in the daffodil world. 'Tyrone Gold' was bred by Brian Duncan of N. Ireland, and this daffodil should be a show winner for many years to come.

This picture of five daffodils don't come out so well, however, taken singularily,'Corbiere' the trumpet daffodil in the back center looks worthy.

With little time, I tried to take some pictures that represent the best of the best in my garden this week. However, that was not easy when there was so little in bloom, I therefore chose to use the few daffodils that were taken to the show, and staged individually. Taken as a collection of five, the few red daffodils that I was able to fine are in this picture.

The left front is 'Glen Clova' 2Y-OOR; the right front is 'Lennymore' 2Y-R; the back left is 'Broadway Village' 2Y-YYR; the back center is 'Barrett Browning' 3WWY-O; and the back right is, 'Brackenhurst' 2Y-O.

Barbara,

Sorry. I didn't answer your question. Judging is supposed to be on a point scale, and for a flower to recieve a blue ribbon, it must score 90 on the scale. At least 85 on the scale to r ...

Barbara,

I've come to the conclusion that judging daffodils, especially in the Mid-Atlantic Region is more political than having good flowers. I have my collections snubbed quiet regularily with n ...

I am worrying about this blue ribbon thing. Is the 90% a basic requirement that must be met first and then after that ribbons "may" be awarded or not, as the judge decides?

It would seem a bit di ...

Brian,

Beautiful Dream has yet to make an appearance here, and 'Twin Sisters' has just bearly cleared the ground. Some of my poets are blooming, most are not.

I still have a couple of weeks to ...

The first 'Twin Sisters' bloom appeared in my garden April 6, so the season is coming to an end. A late planting of 'Camelot' is very impressive at the moment, and 'Beautiful Dream' is still lighting ...
