World Daffodil, and National Daffodil Convention

The American Daffodil National Convention

The World Daffodil Convention and the American Daffodil Society National Convention are the same for the year 2000. The convention is being held from March 30th to April 3, 2000 in Portland, Oregon, at the DoubleTree Columbia River Hotel. It should be a real whopper of an affair. You are welcome to come join us. Specific information on the show, registration, and activities are posted on the American Daffodil Society home pages.

It looks like this year will be the year that all the "pushers" and "shakers" from the daffodil world will be together at one place. This is the place to be. It's also a place not to be timid. If you go, do not hesitate to walk up to anyone and ask daffodil questions. Sit with other daffodil conventioneers and ask questions. Don't be shy.

It's also a busy time in my schedule, as with starting last week and through the month of May, my weekends are taken with something to do with daffodils. There is not a week without a show that Fran and I will be attending, or at least we will be off somewhere on the week-end.

I had planned, when writing this article, on taking pictures of my gardens and giving you a run-down of the daffodils in bloom, and those that I was taking to the show. Unfortunately, we had a cold spell, and the local weather in my garden got down to 17 degrees "F." That caused the daffodils in bloom to fall over with stems at right angles to the ground. Thankfully, I had little in bloom, as it was early, however, that cold has held on for a week, and I have not had any daffodils come in bloom since. At this writing, my foliage is barely out of the ground in most places, with some "green" buds showing in others. It will be a week to 10 days before any new blooms appear.

Since this Daffodil Convention is on the West coast, and I grow my daffodils on the East coast, getting them to the convention would be a special problem in itself. In one of my articles last spring I wrote about how to transport daffodils, long distance by dry-packing. This is a problem that I don't have to deal with this year; no flowers.

The Convention

Portland Daffodil Convention will start on Friday, March 31, and run through Monday, April 3. However for those that know, the fun starts before that.
