The next installment on the subject of daffodils from New Zealand and Australia
When I sent out over the daffodil net for the favorite daffodils from New Zealand and Australia, I received a number of replies. However, one outstanding reply from John A. Hunter, Nelson, New Zealand, just about answered all my questions about New Zealand Daffodils. Not only did he tell me the favorite daffodils that he has hybridized, but provided a list of New Zealand Daffodils that is a must have list, for anyone that is interested in growing "top of the line" daffodils. According to John Hunter, some of the better exhibition New Zealand daffodils are: John Hunter stated, "All of the above varieties have performed very well for me with the exception of Kiwi Magic (I have had trouble to get this one growing vigorously). However, one sees some magnificant flowers from it at our National Shows." "I grow very few Australian daffodils now as our New Zealand varieties are reaching such a high standard. Kasia 2Y-O and Nonchalent 3Y-Y are two of Jacksons that grow very well here with us." Thanks John. Spoken like a true New Zealander. Here in the United States, I find that I have some of the same problems as John did with "certain" daffodils that will not grow well for me, that are winners for everyone else. A quick example is an American west coast bred daffodil 'Payday'. It just doesn't grow well in my garden, but I see plenty of good ones at the shows in my region. Others in my same region claim that the British Isles 'Doctor Hugh' 3W-GOO will not grow for them, while in my garden they are the size of dinner plates, and show quality every year. John, I want to thank you for that fine list of New Zealand daffodils, and please take my order for one of each variety that you named above. I have a weakness when I'm exposed to winning daffodils. If only I had the money to support my weakness. Go To Page: 1 2
