Daffodil Gardening 101 continued After the article on daffodils for the home garden, some of you wanted a list of basic show daffodils for those whose interest are both gardens and for showing. Here goes, at least good for the middle-Atlantic States in the USA, but may have to be adjusted according to your growing area, and climactic conditions. All are consistent show winners, and most are readily available at moderate prices. A few more expensive ones have been listed in categories where there is not much choice, and in some cases because they are just too good to be left out. Especially good cultivars are marked with an asterisk,*, and really super ones with two, **. Nearly all are good growers, and the few finicky ones are worth the effort. Give April Love, Akepa, Ice Chimes, Lemon Silk, Pink Silk, and Ocean Breeze extra good drainage. The color codes used are as follows:
Some daffodils may have multiple colors and will be classified such as 2Y-YYO. This means division 2 large cupped daffodils, with yellow petals or perianth segments, followed by a dash. After the dash, the cup is classified as two parts yellow and one part orange, or yellow cup with an orange rim. Aim for a balanced collection, in rough proportion to the numbers of cultivars listed for each division. Listed by division and simplified color code. Division 1 Trumpet Daffodils
A short list of those division 1 daffodils that I'd chose if I could only have a few, 'Comal', 'Meldrum', 'Bravoure', & 'Gin and Lime'. Division 2 Large Cupped Daffodils
