How to Win Blue Ribbons at Flower Shows

Q. 'What flowers can I enter?' "A." All flowers can be entered. The categories of flowers are contained in the Show Program. Some shows limit exhibits to one entry for each listed category while, others allow more. The wider the variety of your flowers, the more categories can be entered. Most new showers enter the categories for single, or three stems. However, there have been a few, including myself, that just jumped into categories of five stems, and the Green Ribbon awards in my first show. I didn't win the Green Ribbon, however, my Novice collection of five stems won the show. My novices' collection won the Novice award, in addition to the awards for best standard daffodil in the show, and the best collection of five standard daffodils in the show.

I was like most gardeners when I entered that first show, I grew daffodils because I had enjoyed daffodils since I was a kid. I knew hardly anything about the flowers that I was showing, and less about showing. I walked into an unfamiliar place with a lot of flowers. One of the ladies that met me and assisted me when I signed in, suggested that I enter the novice award. I took five of what I though were my best flowers that I was going to enter in the single stem category and put them into a collection of five. As the old saying goes, 'the remainder is history.'
