Grandma Millie's Sausage and Sauerkraut

On occasion, I feel inspired to prepare a little something for those I work with. They're a pretty good bunch of people and like most hard working, highly skilled technical professionals, they appreciate a good meal. We in the information technology profession can work up football player sized appetites(It's not the physical, but the mental stress. I could tell you stories that would curl your hair if straight, and straighten it if curly).

Anyway, in the past, I've taken in a lot of the dishes that have been featured here, but wanted to do something a little different this time. As many of you know, my Dueling Potato Salad article, featured two wonderful recipes created by my Mom-In-Law and Mom. Drawing on their wealth of cooking knowledge over the years has been a great help to me. My Mom has been making a Sauerkraut and Sausage dish for years and this would be a perfect dish to feed about 20 hungry coworkers. You can gain about 2 pounds from the aroma alone!

Grandma Millie's Sausage and Sauerkraut features smoked and Italian sausage, meatballs, sauerkraut, cabbage and a secret ingredient (until now) that puts it over the top. That ingredient... Are you sitting down? V-8. V-8? YES, V-8. It brings out the flavors of the meat and cabbage, and adds a certain flair to the dish. It's also fun to watch the reaction of people when you tell them that the dish has V-8 in it. They kind of tilt their head sideways and give you that I haven't a clue what your talking about, puppy dog look.

After consulting with Mom about a dozen times, I prepared and baked the dish at home, then secured it in my car for the trip into work. Please Note: Your car will smell like sauerkraut for about 13.7 days after the dish has been removed. To make a long story short, the dish received rave reviews from my coworkers, cleaning people, and I'm not sure, but I think the Fed-Ex guy even liked it.

Then next time you have to prepare a meal for a pot luck dinner or Patton's 3rd Army, you should definitely consider Grandma Millie's Sausage and Sauerkraut.
