The Cooking Experiment

Welcome to my laboratory..er..kitchen. This time around we are going to create a new dish and we'll need a couple of volunteers from our audience. What? No one wants to be the recipient of a wonderful new main course dish? Not a problem, I'll simply volunteer my family. Now let's see, where did I put my "Kiss the Cook" chef's hat?

OK then, to the refrigerator we go to see what is in there. No Fridge Critters in sight, which is a good thing, because I don't need to be battling those furry little creatures today. I need all my energy for the culinary experiment.

I start randomly grabbing vegetables: green pepper, onion, mushrooms, better use this celery too, because in another day, it will be a bendable Gumby like toy. Hmmm. Some boneless chicken breast, cream, sour cream, and a little Worcestershire perhaps?

Time to wash, peel, slice, dice, chop and cut all these fine vegetables and chicken. Water chestnuts! Those would go well with this pile of stuff that is now in a pan with a couple of tablespoons of cooking oil. Stink! Just bean sprouts in the pantry. They just won't do and I've no time to go the market. I've hungry victims, er uh, a hungry family to feed.

Rice or noodles? Which one will go better with the chicken and vegetables now happily cooking away in the pan? I opt for the rice, basically because it won't have to be drained, just fluffed up a bit.

Spices! Gee, almost forgot the spices. Oregano, basil, parsley, and a few other fragrant goodies are added the to pan. The aroma is pleasant, but what about the taste? Still too early to tell.

My daughter comes wandering into the kitchen, drawn in by the savory scent that fills the house.

"Smells good in here Dad, what are you making?" she asks.

What is this stuff I'm making? It doesn't really have a name yet. Chicken-mushroom stuff over rice? Creamy chicken rice dish? Clucker and shrooms? I'm not sure what this dish should be called.

"Can you make a salad for me, Sissy?" Since she loves helping in the kitchen, preparing a salad should throw her off the "What is it?" track for a while.

The chicken is nicely browned now, and the veggies are tender. Time to lower the heat and put some more stuff in. I pour in a little cream and fold in the sour cream. A taste test reveals that this chicken stuff is good, but something is missing.

I do like to do this kind of cooking, and I knew from the start it was going to be a winner. Your refrigerator seems a bit more stocked than mine is these days at times; with just two of us home now ...
