Honorable Mention: Metrano is at his best in "I Keep My Misfortune," a touching song in which he asks a departing lover to remember him as if their love was still true.

Artist: Natalie MacMaster

Album: My Roots Are Showing

The Scoop: MacMaster was named Fiddler of the Year four years in a row by the Canadian Country Music Awards. Hopefully this collection-released last year and nominated for a Grammy-will help her cross over into her neighbor to the south. My Roots is devoted to the fiddle music of Cape Breton Island-where MacMaster grew up. This could pose a commercial problem, since most people are more familiar with the Irish fiddle tradition (which emphasizes improvisation, whereas the Cape Breton philosophy strongly encourages sticking by the book).

Highlight Track: The spirited opener "Hey, Johnny Cope!" will even get your angsty, Slipknot-loving younger brother to tap his feet, and maybe even get up and dance a jig across the room. When no one is looking, of course.

Honorable Mention: On the other end of the spectrum is "The Shakin's o' the Pocky," a quietly beautiful, sorrowful piece written by James Scott Skinner.

Artist: SushiRobo

Album: Drawings and Garbage Structures

Release Date: March 19th

The Scoop: A slick album that fully executes almost everything their debut EP hinted at. SushiRobo marries the avant garde of 70's art rock with the modern fascination with machines and electronics. The result is an album with a definite party vibe, but it's a party set in the future. And there are some strange birds on the guest list (i.e. "Royal Taster of Food").

Highlight Track: I don't know what the hell "Rat or Mole?" is about, but it's damned cool. The vocals bring to mind the quirky delivery of M. Doughty , while the chorus will stick to your brain like peanut butter.

Honorable Mention: "Fruit Flies" is even more catchy and much more peppy. Listen to all the layers; there's more at work here than in your average addictive pop song.

Artist: Bertrand Burgalat

Album: The Sssound of Mmmusic

The Scoop: Well, he's been recruited to work with the likes of Nick Cave, Depeche Mode and Air (vocals on "Sexy Boy"), so that should tell you something about Bertrand's talent in the studio. Mmmusic is a luxurious album that is part 70's movie soundtrack, part bossa nova record and part Serge Gainsbourg.
