The Lucky 13: Q & A with Ticklepenny Corner

Ticklepenny Corner has followed up their lovely debut with the brand spanking new Sunday's Best. At the heart of the band are Noah Riemer's songs about family and relationships, complimented by Beth Spransy's violin and vocal contributions. And, oh yeah, they're brother and sister. There was so much to talk about that we went back to the Lucky 13 format to squeeze in four more questions.

ADAM: How’s life?

NOAH: Life is wonderful right now. I'm back from tour and I'm just going to lounge about the house for the month and watch the first-place Cubs!

ADAM: We’ll start with the obvious question. What can listeners expect from this second album, Sunday’s Best?

NOAH: I think it's a record about being home. It's about finding your niche and maybe realizing that you knew where it was all along. Sonically, it's a little more true to our live sound than the last record - there are a few real upbeat numbers and a couple of real slow, sad numbers. I think it's a pretty well balanced record.

ADAM: You’ve added another voice since the last album (Katie Johnson). How did that come about?

BETH: Well, I think that was mostly my doing.

NOAH: Oh, it was, was it?

BETH: We had all been talking about how we should add a backup vocalist, and one night all of us went to a coffeehouse where a few of my friends were playing. Katie ended up singing lead on one song and that's when I decided to ask her. I got a tiny bit of flack from Noah for not discussing it with him before I asked her. I did it anyway because I had been singing with Katie for a little while at church and I knew she could do the job.

ADAM: It seems like “siblings in a band’ is a recipe for a harrowing episode of Behind The Music (Jackson Five, Beach Boys, Black Crowes, Oasis, et. al.) How does the brother-sister dynamic play out in Ticklepenny Corner?

BETH: We have our moments. Noah is very quick to forgive me when I'm a jerk and I'm still learning to be equally forgiving. Mostly we just have disagreements about what songs to play (while we're on stage).

NOAH: Yeah, we generally get along but I've been mentally filing away all of our little disagreements for recall when I begin to write our "made-for-tv"
