The Lucky 13: Q & A with Erin McKeown

Erin McKeown is currently on tour promoting her excellent second album, Distillation. Hop over to http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/1198... for the review. Or check out http://www.erinmckeown.com to see if Erin's playing your town any time soon (the tour is winding down). I just saw her play in L.A. and, believe me, it'd be a night well spent.

ADAM: How's life?

ERIN: Well, Adam, life is pretty good. I am catching up on e-mail while in the car from L.A. to Davis, CA. My tour mangager is driving, so don't worry.

ADAM: What's in your stereo?

ERIN: The new Lucinda Williams, Essence, is currently playing. We just listened to Bjork's "Gling Glo." Up next is Ida's "Will You Find Me," then Danny Michel's "In the Belly of the Whale." It's a long trip.

ADAM: The world ends tomorrow and the Ticketmaster Upstairs puts you in charge of recruiting the Eternal House Band. Who do you bring on board?

ERIN: I'd grab Mister Dave Chalfant, the man who produced Distillation. I love him; we just musically click! Then I would get Brian Jones and Stewart Myers from the band Agents of Good Roots to play bass and drums.

ADAM: How about the booking down in Hell?

ERIN: I know exactly what the booking down in Hell is like. But since I still go to Hell quite a bit, I'll deflect that question and pass on giving specifics.

ADAM: Which posters were covering your walls when you were younger?

ERIN: That depends on how old I was. I was pretty obsessive about posters. Around age 12 you would have found a lot of New Kids on the Block hanging about. About four years later, those had been replaced by Dave Matthews, long before he got world famous. I was a fan from the Virginia acoustic scene.

ADAM: Where on earth did you come up with the lyrics to "La Petite Mort"?

ERIN: They came to me in a dream, brought by the ghost of Liberace. Really. In my dream, I was sitting in my backyard (well, I mean it didn't look like my backyard, but it WAS my backyard, in that dreamy kind of way). Well, not sitting, but working in my garden. Which I would never do in real life, by the way.

I was planting something or other when a hand came to rest on my shoulder. And it was Liberace, with the sun behind his head, in the white suit Puff Daddy wears sometimes in his videos. Liberace had a watermelon under his arm. He presented it to me without a word...
