The Scoop: Engaging, earnest rock from former members of The Suede Chain and Wood. The Lift take their cues from a slew of giants, most clearly in the meditatively melodic U2-styled "Red Shirt." Elsewhere, frontman Matt Docter reaches for the vocal acrobatics of Jeff Buckley ("Favorite Record") and the band does Travis better than Travis has been doing Travis lately ("Bury the Lead"). Fortunately, Docter has a great, malleable voice and the band has the chops to pull most of this off - the sound is derivative, at times transparently so, but a lot of good rock and roll has come from very definite blueprints (even the wildly creative Flaming Lips, after all, got busted for lifting from Cat Stevens). While a few tracks could have used some time in the studio gym to burn off flab, the best ones make this little-known band sound like a well-oiled arena rocker, unafraid to reach for emotional heights. They even dip into some driving if blunt political commentary ("War Parade"). Recommended for fans of all the aforementioned bands.
