ADAM: Thanks for doing our interview, Jason. How's life?

JASON MARTIN: No sweat. Life is good. I'm paying the bills, making music, and in general I'm pretty happy.

ADAM: In the press release for Old, you say that "the fans are gonna freak out," which begs the time-honored interview question: how is the new album different from the band's past albums?

JASON: First I'd like to state that the press release was a series of questions I answered that I didn't think would be quoted so literally. I don't think the new album is some great invention that will awe people. I do think it's a good record that fans of the band will appreciate. Basically I think it's new good new songs with the production that we have been trying to get since the beginning. The new album is something which I am actually proud of. I've liked the songs in the past, but I was never quite pleased with the production, on the new album I was happy with both aspects.

ADAM: In preparing for this, I was combing through as many old interviews as I could find and I came across a couple things I found interesting. First, I read that touring was seen as just a necessary part of the business (whereas many indie bands will claim it's their first love). Would you rather be in the studio than on the road?

JASON: I probably like being in the studio better. Though with our new line up I also really enjoy being on the road now. It's fun to play the new songs, everyone in the band is super easy going, so it just makes it fun. I miss my family when I'm gone, but we have a great time out on the road too.

ADAM: The other thing was that you admitted going through phases of burning out on listening to music (an admission I can recently relate to). I was curious whether these cycles tend to coincide with when you're working on your own material - or are there times when you just go cold turkey with music in general?

JASON: I've kinda been burned out on hearing music in general for the past few years, though I listen to music most always. It's just seems so rare to find good new music. As random as it sounds we listened to the new Metallica record about 20 times on the last tour, it's crazy what those guys are doing !
