Top brass commits to kava ban for police. Media reports in Vanuatu in recent days have raised concerns about the conduct of members of the Vanuatu Police Force - particularly those on duty. And it all comes down to that most Pacific of pursuits - drinking kava. The Daily Post newspaper in Vanuatu claims a number of police officers have been seen imbibing the mildly narcotic drink while in uniform. While the consumption of Kava is an evening ritual for many Ni-Vanuatu, members of the Vanuatu Police Force are under strict instructions not to consume kava while on duty.

Community debate over Amnesty Bill rolls on The Fiji government has extended public consultation of its controversial Reconciliation, Tolerance and Unity Bill until parliament's November sitting. The extension is to allow for wider community debate of the controversial section of the bill which could provide amnesty for participants found guilty of taking an active role in the 2000 coup. Critics of the process are becoming increasingly frustrated by the seemingly endless nature of the debate, and want a decision on the Bill - one way or another.

Pacific Trade Issues
ACP head urges region to speak as one The Secretary General of the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific grouping of countries has urged member states in the region to present a united front when pushing for assistance on trade issues. Brussels-based Sir John Kaputin, who is in Papua New Guinea at the moment, said the voice of Pacific countries will be louder if they speak as one at ACP meetings. The grouping is particularly important because most international aid from the European Union is distributed through the ACP.
