The Fiji government was annoyed that it was rated behind Samoa and Tonga. Well, there's another UNDP report in preparation and it is going to be far more detailed in its analysis of particular Pacific Countries. It's the Pacific Human Development Report, and will be published early next year.

Vanuatu
Vanuatu's Red Cross is planning a campaign to raise funds for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, which lashed the Gulf region of the United States on August 29. However, a former member of the Union of Moderate parties, Seule Tong, has criticised the initiative, saying the Red Cross should focus on homeland issues before donating to other countries. He says any money collected would be better spent on those left homeless from the 2004 eruption of the Ambrym Volcano. http://www.abc.net.au/ra/pacbeat/stories...

French Polynesia
France warns it's still in control. France's new High Commissioner to French Polynesia has reminded residents that Paris is still responsible for foreign affairs in the territory. The clarification is being seen as a shot across the bows of French Polynesia's president Oscar Temaru, who has been developing relations with his Pacific neighbours, often without consultation. French High Commissioner Anne Boquet made the statement last week, although he said the comment didn't amount to a change of direction by the French government.
