Malaita Eagles Force
There are indications police in the Solomon Islands have carried out more high-profile arrests, which are are apparently linked to the arrests earlier this month of prominent Malaita Eagles Force figures, Andrew Nori and Leslie Kwaiga. At issue is a payment of a five-million Solomon Island dollars compensation payment, at the height of the tensions in 2000, which was subverted due to coercion.

Urbanization
Problems of urban drift and illegal squatter settlements have again set tensions rising this month in several Pacific Island countries, including Papua New Guinea and Fiji. Threats of eviction have been issued to people squatting on government and leasehold land in the cities of Port Moresby and Suva.

Tonga
Tonga is a feudal state on the brink of explosion and Australia and New Zealand must take responsibility in bringing about change. At least, that's the opinion of New Zealand Opposition MP Ken Shirley, of the centre-right ACT Party. He says that while he isn't advocating military intervention, Tonga is in a situation similar to that just before the French Revolution, and could be facing social unrest.

The southern hemisphere has certainly come in for its share of Royal watching over the last week or so. The young Danish Royals Frederick and Mary are wrapping up a two-week trip to Australia, and his Royal Highness Prince Charles of Wales has just concluded his calendar of royal duties in Australia. According to loyal royal watchers, Prince Charles has landed at Nadi International Airport.

Dropping the single supplement is good news to singles everywhere but especially those hooked on diving and who knows manta rays are charming creatures and easy topics for conversation.

Fiji Hilton to Open First Stage In October
The first stage of the $270 million Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Spa at Denarau Island is set to open in October. It will include 138 villas, a 120-meter long pool, a 250-seat restaurant and reception area and will be known as the Fiji Beach Resort. The second stage, to begin by the end of the year, will feature additional villas that will bring the total to more than 300 villas. Each villa will have a lounge, dining area, three double bedrooms, outside decking and a pool.
