The people of China, the Chinese ,are a remarkable group of people with a history that dates back to atleast five thousand years. The Chinese civilization is considered to be the only continuous civilization. How this civilization has remained so dynamic and coherent while other civilizations have withered with time is a fascinating story by itself.
The rich chinese culture finds expression in its diversity. The people of Han origin are the dominant ethnic group while other ethnic groups include the Manchus, the Mongols and the Hui(Chinese Muslims). The various people of China have lived in harmony, sharing the same legacy and forming the nation of China The ancient Chinese established a feudal fief system. In this system the whiole country was divided into a number of areas each of which was assigned to a member of the royal family. There were altogether ten classes in the system each class having to pay tribute and offer services to the one above. Before the Industrial revolution, China was a trend-setter in science and technology. Unfortunately, this aspect of Chinese culture was ignored by the world and by China herself ,until very late. Though not the home of Buddhism, China has a vast treasure of Buddhist scriptures. Confucianism too is a leading religion. China has progessed from a feudal society to a modern society that is home to many a scientific development.Though it remains the most populous country, China has used her vast manpower to become a country that is fast emerging as one of the super powers of this century.
