In 1991, Pooja Bharkatiya won the nationals in Jamshedpur at 18 to become the youngest every national women's snooker champion. She retained the title and won the billiards crown in 1992 in Indore at 19 years. Aged 15, she competed in the inaugural billiards and snooker nationals at Bangalore in August 1989, to become the youngest participant ever in a national tourney. Renu and Pooja, representing Madhya Pradesh became the first mother-daughter combination to play in the same nationals. Kamala C. Babu from Chennai, the oldest competitor among the women, at 68 years to actively participate in the nationals. Collegian Anuja Thakur from Mumbai at 18 years, is the youngest player on the circuit today. Mumbai's Heena Khandelwal was awarded the Shiv Chhatrapati Award for excellence in sports in 1996-1997.
