The first quarter-final match of the Victor Chandler World Pool Championships 2000 kicked off today with "Cold-Faced Killer" Fong-Pang Chao from Chinese Taipei taking on the young Aussie Johl Younger.
According to Earl Strickland, the center table at Cardiff this year is not taking too well to breaks and this proved true as most of the breaks didn't yield a pot at all. The second frame saw some great safety play from both players but it was taken by the Chinese. Some controversy regarding his earlier match against Ortmann exists where Chao was supposed to have made a sudden nod while Ortmann was potting a crucial black eight-ball, causing him to miscue. But, the matter seems to have resolved as we see Chao in the QF round today. Chao managed to clean the tables pretty effectively, advancing to the semi-finals where he will meet some real tough challengers. Among those are the indomitable Steve Davis, Earl Strickland and many other pool greats. Conspicuous by their absence are some of Phillipines' champions like Bustamante who are not in the draw this year.
