The key contenders for the spot, the UAE were defeated 3-2 in a set of matches that were fast-paced and well-thought. The UAE skipper Obaid gave his team a good start by beating India's Dharminder Lilly. The bespectacled lad won the first frame, but Obaid, playing solid snooker, reeled off breaks of 59, 36, 40, 27 and 25 to rocket through in four straight frames and take the match 4-1. Ashok Shandilya restored the balance when he overcameRashid Mazreoi 4-0 while former Asian champion, Yasin Merchant took India 2-1 ahead with a convincing 4-1 win over Essa al Saeed. With the fate of the match hanging in balance, Sarang Shroff allowed the Indian contingent to breathe a sigh of relief as he swept up the green with a 4-2 victory over Salim Ali Salim. The final match between Siddharth Rao and promising Arab youngster Salim Bin Dhiban was thus, for pride alone. The UAE player won it 4-3.
