The World Professional Pool Championships, 1999This week marked some of the most exciting pool action to take place this year, with the commencement of the World Professional Pool Championships, 1999. The Cardiff International Arena in Wales erupted in a cacophony of clacking balls, as 96 of the world's top professional pool players, smashed the opening racks of what has so far proved to be a tournament of surprises. Play is down to Day 7 where, the players vie for a spot in the final 16. This article highlights, the action so far, right from the round robin matches, followed by the past few "race-to-9" matches and what's coming up. The group table matches, took up the earlier half of the tournament, where players were classified into 16 groups of 6, according to seeding. The top 4 players from each of the group matches would qualify for the next round. These players would then play the race-to-9 matches, where the first player to finish 9 frames, would win the match and thus, advance. Some great frames were shot and there were many nail-biting finishes. SECOND ROUND Archer 9-5 Wiseman Highlights Thursday July 22nd Jimmy White went out in style to Philippines great Efren Reyes in a thriller at the Cardiff International Arena. It was the second successive game that the snooker star had taken to a final rack - but after a miraculous recovery shot to make it 8-8, White could not clinch the vital decider. The popular White had no complaints: "They've got so many shots that snooker players don't know about, they are different class. I enjoyed every second, and Reyes is my favourite pool player so I just hope he goes on and wins it."
