Think Caribbean During the Winter Months

With the weather dipping down into the negative digits in some parts of the world during the winter, it's time to start thinking and planning on a nice, warm Caribbean vacation. This month we will take a look at the cruise lines that visit ports of call in the western region of the Caribbean and next month we'll take a look at the eastern and southern regions.

The western regions of the Caribbean include the Bahamas, Key West, Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Mexican Caribbean, Central America and the Panama Canal.

There are quite a few ships you can choose to sail you down to warmer waters. Here's a list to get you started:

American Canadian Caribbean Line - The emphasis on this boat is light adventure, natural attractions and a good look at the local culture. Passengers tend to be more mature and experienced travelers. Think low-key and no Vegas-style shows.

Carnival Cruise Lines - This boat is about youthful, casual and "let's have a party." The choice of cruises range from three to 10 days so no matter your budget or time constraints this cruise works well.

Celebrity Cruises - You'll find moderate prices and not as much glitz as on other cruise liners. Entertainment and recreation are available however, and the ambiance and variety is not lacking either. The cruise company has eight ships to choose from and it might be just the relaxing trip you need.

Clipper Cruise Line - These ships are small and definitely for the nature lover and traveler who is interested in the culture of the regions. Smaller ships mean getting into ports that megaliners can't maneuver so if you're in for an adventure and some out-of-the-way locations Clipper is a good choice.

Costa Cruise Lines - This cruise is more of the European atmosphere with an Italian staff and good 'ol Italian food as well. Owned by Carnival Cruise Lines, the ship still maintains her individuality and charm.

Crystal Cruises - This one is real luxury and all about pampering the refined traveler. Probably not a good first time cruise. Another rare offer onboard is the Computer University @ Sea - where else can you learn computers in such style?

Cunard - Popular for the up-scale traveler and definitely for the traveler who enjoys a flare for European style. Think QE2 and old-world charm.

Disney Cruise Line - The name says it all. Fun for kids, very family-oriented.

Holland America Line - A contemporary floating experience with a leisurely pace. Attracts mature cruisers and the more experienced traveler.
