Picking the Perfect Cruise

Jun 1, 2001 - © Rita Cook

How many days you want to spend on your cruise will depend on your budget and the time you have available. You can generally choose from three-night cruises to one-month cruises, depending on the cruise line. A good start for first-timers is a five or six-night cruise.

Budget wise, you can spend a lot or a little. On just about every cruise you can expect the following package:
1. Accommodations
2. Three meals and snacks
3. Shipboard entertainment (will not include casino)
4. Health facilities such as walking track, exercise equipment
5. Shipboard activities
6. Transfers from the hotel or airport to the ship

Items that might not be included are:
1. Airfare to ship departure city
2. Activities at the various ports of call
3. Port charges
4. On-board shopping
5. Alcoholic drinks
6. Tipping

As for the itinerary, some cruises have you stopping at ports everyday, while many balance it out with equal days at sea. This is my preference because it gives you time to enjoy the ship and you can appreciate the land excursions too.

On the other hand, a cruise is a cruise and that means spending time in that lounge chair on deck and looking out at the crystal blue waters. Maybe you don't even care about the ports of call, it's just about the rest and relaxation. That's fine too. As you begin to cruise more often you will get a feel for what your cruise preference is and it's then that you will definitely be a seasoned cruiser.
