Summer Time Blues and Relationships

© Susan Johnson

Happy Summer to everyone. Again we face the trials of Summer Vacations and picnics and cookouts. Sometimes these can be very hard to handle and family and friends are not always the most supportive in these areas.

If you read my articles here and know me, you know I think every person (ie. family, friends, etc.) that say “you can go they have a port-a-john” should be locked inside one in 90 degree weather for an hour........ this would make them understand.

Another warning is food sitting out in the sun.... Alot of folks can get away with eating that potato salad that is just a little funny looking or been there a little to long... We can’t, so please be choosy about the foods you choose to eat and if possible take you own.

I don’t have to many problems with parties, I have good friends and most of them quietly let me know that I can use the bathroom in the house and even lay down for a nap if I feel I need to. If you feel close enough to people that they know what is wrong with you they can be very kind. But I also understand that this disease is not one that we brag about or are willing to tell everyone. I have very few friends that actually know about me having Crohn’s and the problems that go with it.

I am verging on a brand new problem that I am sure alot of you have faced and dealt with and I am not sure how I will do. I am single again and started dating. Now here is a prime example.... the person I am seeing I have been social friends with for 11 years and he has no clue what Crohn’s is or what it is about. I have slid a few clues in and I talk about the web page and how I help people and the articles I write. So he knows something is wrong.... he knows I take medication... but besides that I have been very successful in hiding my horrid bathroom situations and most of the symptoms of Crohn’s from him.

The problem.... we are getting much closer now. We have been seeing each other for about 4 months now and I am very happy with the way he treats me and protects me from every little thing in the world..... it is pretty different from the verbal abuse I took every day for years. He is starting to spend more and more time here with me and is talking
