Crohn's Disease and Remicade and Bone Disease

On August 16th, 2000 I walked into my Gastro's office prepared to ask for a colostomy. The pain had just gotten to be to much and the bathroom necessity had taken most of my life from me.

I was tired of being left behind while everyone else went and did things. I missed a nephew's 30th birthday party because it was an hour and a half away and on a boat called the "Lucky Ducky" which I was sure would not have a restroom available.

I missed going to the Pirates' game with the kids because it was to far away and the bathrooms there would be packed I could never stand in line that long.

I had had it. I wanted my life back!!!!!

Well, my GI being the wonderful person that he is understood completely. He agreed the bone and joint pain was a serious issue and that there was most likely damage done to the bones by Crohn's Disease itself and long term steroid use.

He also agreed that my urgent bathroom needs - needed to be controlled a lot more.

The other major malfunction was Fistulas...... I was so sick of fistulas coming and going, the pain, the swelling, the mess of the busting and draining. The lack of feeling feminine because I always had a huge mass down there. The stop it had put on my sex life.

So...... we together decided to try 6-mp and Remicade treatments. Now I am very excited to be getting the Remicade treatments and a little afraid of the 6-mp. This is a very strong drug and my immune system is nothing to brag about anyway so I was really leery of something that was going to make that worse.

But the 6-mp is what they use to get rid of fistulae now along with the Remicade treatments. So I am trying it. I started on 50 mg of 6-mp a day and in one week increased it to 75 mg a day. Within that one week I managed somehow to get an eye infection. Who knows how.... only thing I could think of was that an elderly friend of mine was in the hospital and I did spend a few hours there more than one day so I must have touched something there and then rubbed my eye.

There is a warning right on the 6-mp prescription pamphlet NOT to touch your nostrils or eyes without washing your hands first.

So I went to my PCP and got eye drops for the infection and in the last week it has healed
