Why A Support Page?

Let me tell you how my Web Page got started. In October of 1996 I had become so ill with Crohn's Disease that I was unable to leave my house. I was living on Chicken Noodle soup and still in pain all of the time. My sister (and also my biggest fan) came to visit and brought me a computer. She said "This will keep you busy."

Well I was so nervous it had been years since I had touched a computer and I had no idea what I would do on one. Originally I thought I would index my baseball card collection and keep it on there. Yes, a computer would be good for that!!! Well, I still have the baseball card collection packed away in boxes.

My First computer was a 386 which ran windows 3.1 but I loved it. Actually I did not know enough about computers then at that time to realize how small it was.

I surfed and surfed the Internet looking at the information available about Crohn's Disease. Truthfully since my disease had not really been active for years prior to 1996 I did not feel qualified at that time to build a medical page of advice. I barely knew what the newest medications were and had just starting using them myself.

I found a page with a long long list of names on it. It was called the Contact Center for Crohn's, Colitis. You can find it in my list of links. I knew then that was what I wanted to do - meet other people with Crohn's Disease. I had never actually met another person that had Crohn's Disease. Even though at that time I had been diagnosed for 21 years. Talk about feeling alone.

Next was how to draw people to the page and how to find out if they had the same problems I had. So I built a tiny survey and put it up on the web page. Then I started writing to people with Crohn's and telling everyone that would listen about my web page. Next thing I knew people were responding almost daily.

I started receiving letters, completed surveys started coming in, people were signing my guest book. I could not believe my eyes. But the part that convinced me that I had chosen
