The Christmas holiday represents the birth of our Savior. Another year is coming to a close as you spend time with family and friends reminiscing about the past. What does the holiday season mean to you?
Traditions in my family have changed over the years. Going to Mamaw Eliza's on Christmas Eve was a tradition in our family for many years. She would wait until everyone arrived, we all ate dinner and caught up on family news. Then she would make everyone sing Christmas carols and her favorite church hymns before she would let us exchange gifts. The kids, including me, were always so excited and we wanted to open the presents as soon as everyone arrived. Little did we know that a surprise was in store. Santa came with a huge back of presents and he always had one for each of us. One particular Christmas will always be vivid in my mind. Mom was making peanut butter roll candy in Mamaw's kitchen. We were all gathered around the table watching her mix the ingredients with a hand mixer. Apparently I was a little too close. All of a sudden I ruined the entire batch of candy. Mamaw's electrical outlet was attached to the kitchen light. When the light was on the outlet worked and if the light was turned off the outlet was off also. The mixer was plugged into that particular outlet. Somehow my hair ended up too close to the candy bowl and with it being quite long at the time the electric mixer started to climb toward my head. My cousin Mike reached up and turned off the light, which turned the mixer off. But, my Mamaw was so excited that she turned the light back on which in turn sent that mixer climbing again. It went all the way to my scalp. That was some experience in itself but the worst thing was Mom wouldn't let me wash my hair because it was very cold outside. Then Santa came and I was totally embarrassed. Though that Christmas was a disaster I still remember it and many others fondly. Such as the very first Christmas after I married my husband Tim. We didn't have enough money to buy a tree or decorations so my Mamaw Maxine let us borrow a little two-foot tree and one string of clear lights. I think I remember this Christmas because I spent so much time crocheting all my tree decorations. Tim and I have been married for nearly 11 years now and my daughter is taking up the craft of crochet. Here is a wreath ornament she made to share with you. Go To Page: 1 2
