Learn to Read Crochet Patterns - Part 2


"2dc in next st" Work 2 double crochet stitches in the next stitch on the working row.

"repeat from + to + once" Repeat all of the directions listed between the two plus signs one time.

"repeat previous row" Repeat all of the directions for the previous row.

"6 ch-4 sps" This is used as a reference. You should have 6 spaces on the previous row that consisted of 4 chains.

"GAUGE: 4dc=1 inch; 2 dc rows =1 inch" Many patterns have gauge measurements at the beginning of the pattern. To check your gauge, work a swatch like the pattern says using the recommended hook size. Measure the swatch to see if it is correct. To obtain the correct gauge adjust the hook size. If your swatch is larger than the gauge listed in a pattern, decrease the hook size. If the swatch is smaller increase your hook size.
