A special, cherished moment in time. A day of celebration. One of the most special times in a woman’s life is the day she marries her sweetheart. In days past, mothers and grandmothers would pass down quality heirlooms for that special day in a woman’s life. Heirlooms that became family treasures handed down from generation to generation. Whether it be a hand crocheted handkerchief , a doily or a wedding dress, the item was treasured because it was so lovingly made and thoughtfully given. What could make your daughter’s wedding day more special than to give her hand crocheted accessories for her wedding. She may even want her wedding gown to be crocheted. Heirlooms such as these are rarely heard of anymore due to the decrease in such crafts being passed down. If your family hasn’t passed wedding heirlooms to subsequent generations you could start a real tradition. Crocheted lace offers a delicate feminine touch to any occasion but it seems to be taylor made weddings.

The following links may help you make your (or your daughter’s) wedding day a more memorable one. Some patterns listed are free but others require a charge.

Whether you crochet the table decorations, a wedding garter or the wedding gown, the bride and groom are sure to appreciate the time and effort put forth for their special day. My Sister-In-Law was married this past March. For her wedding I offered my time as part of the wedding gift. I crocheted two flower girl baskets, a ring bearer’s pillow and her garter. Everyone loved the special touch that was added through the use of crocheted items and a lot of the pressure of preparing everything for the wedding was taken off of the bride. Her wedding was beautiful to say the least!

Start your own wedding tradition today by making one special item that can be passed from generation to generation. Give your ancestors something to treasure and your family something to remember you by. To add a special touch you could give the pattern to be handed down along with the item you choose. Encourage your relatives to crochet so the craft can be passed down along with your treasures.
