Welcome back to the latest Crime 55 contest. The judges-Craig, John, Chris, Mary, Rich, Diane, and Poe-pondered long and relentlessly to choose just five winners. Thanks to the judges and entrants!

Here are the top stories, in winning order, submitted for the January Crime 55 contest:

HATE TO SEE YOU GO
by Allen McGill

"I know you organized this farewell party for me," Joe announced. "Just so you know, I can't wait to get away from all you losers."

"We know," said his secretary. Everyone gathered to listen. "So this isn't a farewell party. It's a good riddance party, creep."

Joe's co-workers glad-handed him right through the open window.

TRANS CONFUSION
by Allen McGill

"Sit there," the doctor ordered, entering the office. "Don't move, you bastard. The police will be here any minute."

I started to rise. "What's going...?"

"She was pregnant," he shouted. "Before she died, she said she was raped and beaten by you, her father."

"Not possible! I'm a trans-sexual. I'm her mother, not her father!"

SENSELESS
by Anne Wilkes

I saw her from a block away, hunched and beaten-looking.

"Need help?" I asked when I reached her.

The knife flashed; I jumped back, but not fast enough. My blood ran onto the sidewalk as she dug through my pockets, grinning hideously.

"You won't need these anymore," she said, taking my wallet and cigarettes.

TERROR
by Panic

Bombs?
  Too common.
Poison the masses?
  Been done before.
Disease? Infection?
  That's boring.
What, then?
  I'm thinking perhaps something less . . . overdone.
Ah, gas! Nukes?
  Come now, think!
I have it: Window pop-ups.
Yes! Brilliant! They will slowly and suggestively drive the population mad-while we sit back and watch them kill each other. Genius!

MOMENTS OF WEAKNESS
by R. F. C.

The pistol trembled as she coolly stared at him.
"Put the gun down, we can talk this through," he said.
"You promised you wouldn't cheat. You said I was the only one!" she accused.
"I made a mistake. I was weak. I'll never do it again!"
Andrea. Melissa. Donna. Heidi. A stripper named Yvette.
Enough.
