There was a great turnout for the October Crime 55 contest. The judges pondered long and hard to choose just five favorites.
Thanks to all of the entrants, and thanks to Craig, John, Chris, Diane, Mary, and Poe for their judging efforts. Here are the top five stories, in winning order, submitted for the October Crime 55 contest:
THE STORYTELLER
The tiny, frail woman in the nursing home told everyone she'd killed her husband and buried him in their yard. Finally the police investigated, and found two skeletons where she told them to dig. "Oh dear," she chuckled when confronted. "I forgot about my neighbor who saw what I did and tried to blackmail me."

They scanned Puna's remote lava cliffs.
"Barren like our marriage," she said. "Let's jump to a romantic ending."
"You first," he said, bumping her into the crashing waves. Who'd prove she hadn't slipped?
Two fishermen emerged from the rocks, pointing at him.
Damn, only one way to show innocence. He leaped to join his wife. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . OUTLINE FOR A BANK ROBBERY Rent a garage. "Could you deliver this briefcase to a man in the bank lobby? Stand by the door; he'll recognize it." Note to drive-through teller: "My partner has a bomb in a briefcase ..."
Park in the garage. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
TWO PLACES
"I didn't mug nobody," the kid said. "Like I told you, I was with my man, Cato, in the park."
"Write that down," the cop said.
"Sure." When finished, he asked, "Can I go now?"
