Item #1049 is a 6" x 15*" black sign that reads:
If you or someone you know digs really different gifts, this is the place for you. Get yourself a "body bag" garment bag or a stadium blanket with the L.A. Coroner's logo embroidered on it. Perhaps some body-outline Post-it notes are just your thing. Evidently, the black, bib-style apron with "spare hands" on one pocket and "spare ribs" on the other is a hot seller. Maybe for Father's Day?
It's a weird idea, selling things with the coroner’s logo on them, but the shop brought in more than $700,000 in its first three years of operation (it opened in 1993) and is still doing very well.
Located in the Los Angeles County Coroner's office downtown, the business got its start with a few employees who started selling T-shirts with the body outline to other employees for casual company functions. Demand grew as friends and family of the employees spread the word. So mugs were added, and the operation took off. They moved it out of a closet at the end of the second floor hall (where it earned its name) and into an official space where it is now.
Skeletons in the Closet raises funds for the Youthful Drunk Driving Visitation Program (YDDVP), an alternative-sentencing option for youth convicted of driving under the influence, and drug-, alcohol-, or weapons-related offenses. The program includes a tour of the morgue and a view of an autopsy in progress, which may be why it has a high success rate.
True crime fiends and mystery lovers alike will get a kick out of the goods in this shop.
