Cheap Thrills
My enemy is the ever-elusive silverfish (they eat the glue in book bindings). My hero is the bookseller who knows I’m a junkie — particularly for thrillers and true crime. The public library, of course, is a great resource. But gee, they want the books back when you’re done with them. I just stumbled onto a publisher who can get you into a good mystery or suspense novel for less than $10. Dover Publications in Mineola, New York, has a catalog of books in these genres. Some of them are only one or two bucks – not bad, huh? A sampling: Doyle: Hound of the Baskervilles Contact Dover Publications at 31 East 2nd Street, Mineola, NY 11501 (800) 233-3130 for a catalog. If these aren’t your cup of tea, search for your favorites at Half.com (e-mail me for a $5-off certificate). You can’t beat the prices: I found Monster by Jonathan Kellerman for $1.50 — in hardcover. Can’t find it at Half.com? Try comparing new-book prices at PriceScan. For those who are less material than me, don’t forget the rising popularity of e-books. iPublish has a list of the latest books — I spotted Michael Connelly and Ed MCBain on there. Or drop into the eBook Mall. Looking for a real live bookstore in your area that caters to the mystery reader? Check out Sisters in Crime for one hidden in your area.
