WHO, WHAT & WHERE OF STREET CRIMECrime and population * Population density also affects crime – the more people in a condensed area, the higher the crime occurrences. So crimes are higher in cities, during the in season in vacation spots, on large college campuses or public gatherings. Again, the belief is that people close together are more likely to become agitated and there is more opportunities. Crime and Relationships * Most acts of violence happen between two people who know each other. It is statistically rare than an act of violence, particularly a homicide, is committed by a stranger. It is more likely that such a crime will occur over an interpersonal conflict and that the offender would not harm someone they did not have the emotional relationship with. * Criminal activity is usually intra racial. This means that unless the crime is a hate crime, crimes in general are usually NOT a racial issue. In fact, most groups victimize people within their racial group. In other words, whites victimize whites, blacks victimize blacks, Asians victimize Asians, etc. However, there is no one group that commits or is victimized by crimes more than another. (Note: certain ethnic or racial groups may get arrested or convicted more than others due to prejudices within the criminal justice system, however this is not an indication that the group commits more crime.) This situation is also true within social class. Most people who victimize others do so within their same economic class. However, there is no indication that either the wealthy or the poor are victimized more than the other.
