Elk, members of the deer family today spend so much time at Rocky Mountain National Park that they have become the living symbols of the park. It wasn’t always that way. Elk originally inhabited the plains but they were extensively hunted, reducing their numbers to a dangerously low level. The Colorado state government stepped in and since 1927 continue to protect the elk. The population still fluctuates but has grown considerably.

Shawnee Indians called these creatures Wapiti, which means white deer. Although elk have a pale yellow rump and dark brown legs, stomach, and head; the Indians were probably referring to the elk’s spring coat, which lightens during the season as if bleached by the sun.

What is the attraction to the elk? These days its amazing to see one or two animals living in their natural habitat let alone herds. And, the mating season draws a lot of attention. During mating season, bulls compete for the opportunity to breed with harems of female elk. The start of the season literally can be heard as the bull elk bugle — an eerie sound that echoes through the park during dawn and dusk.

The bulls are easy to spot because they have huge antler racks that weigh from six pounds to more than 22 pounds.

People come from all over to witness this ritual each year. The park officials ensure that the elk are not harmed by instituting specific viewing rules, such as staying in your vehicle and not approaching the animals.

Park visitors may view the animals from their cars without having to drive too far into the park. It’s a treat to witness these creatures even when mating season is over. If you plan to visit Colorado, I recommend a visit to the Rocky Mountain National Park. Perhaps you will have a chance to see the elk in their beautiful natural surroundings.
