CULTIVATE YOUR EMPLOYEE© Barbara Massie
Really -- money isn't everything. When the wages you pay are low by necessity, give other perks. When a person does an excellent job, give praise. This can be a pat on the back, an afternoon off with pay or you pay for lunch once in a while. The Power of Praise tells the benefits of constructive praise. When you have the opportunity read the book written by Mary Kay Ash, the founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics - Mary Kay On People Management. Her business experience from day one has been based on the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Everyone at every level is treated in the same fair way and she teaches employees to live by the same guideline. Her management philosophy has taken her far with both profit and with people. Her philosophy is food for thought for both personal and business life. Decide what your philosophy is and use the Complete Guidelines to Design Your Training Plan within the scope of that philosophy. The employee who knows what she is doing is much more comfortable than one trying to bluff her way through. Give thorough training telling how the work is done. The techniques taught will be yours, but it is your business. Training to one boss might be sitting the person down with an item of product and saying, "Here make this, all the supplies are on those shelves." This method is unfair to the employee, to the business and to the boss. Every employee needs training, regardless of simplicity of duties. A person hired to answer the phone needs training. There is much more to answering the phone then picking it up after it has rung 5 times and saying , "Yeah?" Write down instructions of what is expected. Perhaps the phone must be answered before more than three rings; the correct greeting is "Good morning, Golden Moment Productions." Then there is a procedure for transferring the call, writing down a message, giving information. Make the employee comfortable with clear guidelines. Motivate the employee by allowing her to learn to do the job properly. Motivation Theory will give you hints. Training is generally more successful when broken down into different mediums: visual, written, oral and performing. It has been shown that instructions can be deciphered and retained better when a person can hear instruction and have a diagram or picture to support what she is hearing.
