JOB APPLICATION and INTERVIEW QUESTIONS

Jun 8, 2001 - © Barbara Massie

  • If you have to fire a family member will that member still want to be a part of your family?

  • These might seem like silly questions, but hiring family is entirely different from hiring an outsider. Chances of conflict are greater when working with family. Right up front, you must stress the duties, responsibilities and expectations of the overall picture. Have the job description, hours expected to work and company business plan in writing to share with the family member.

Let the family member know you are the boss and she or he will be treated as any other employee. During business hours, conduct business. When business hours are over, then you can rehash the problem the siblings are having with Mom.

Many family members can work together in the right spirit, but be certain that this is for you. Perhaps the offer of working for a next to nothing wage is your incentive to hire a family member, but will you get only what you pay for?

Come back next time and we'll look at "Hiring the Right Person" and some other hints.
