THE BIGGEST CULPRIT

Dec 8, 2000 - © Barbara Massie

THE KITCHEN

Usually the biggest culprit in the house is the kitchen. Dirty dishes piled in the sink and the table covered with papers can make the whole kitchen look a mess. Straighten those strategic places. Your whole house will look better and your stress level will be lower.

Since the kitchen is usually the most used room in the house, it can become your biggest hassle in life. Read The Hub of the Home To take some of the stress out of staying "on top" of the kitchen, try some of the following:

Keep the dishes put away.
        One of Murphy's Laws:

"A sink full of dirty dishes attracts visitors."

If you have a dishwasher, empty it shortly after a load is done, then you can restack it with the dirty dishes as they are used. If you have a dish drainer and you are a "let the dishes drip dry" and not a towel drier, still put away the clean dishes as soon as possible.

When you have family, let them clean up after themselves. Having everyone clear their own place from the table after eating saves you time and hassle. Even young children can put their plates and bowls into the dishwasher!

Keep the counters clear of clutter. Clutter isn't the canister set or the utensil holder, it is the cereal box or mustard jar that just didn't get put away. Conquering Kitchen Clutter might give you some hints.

Don't feel burdened by everyday chores, shift some of the responsibilities to your family. Children as young as two can be given mini-chores to do and spouses as old as you can share. Use a day when you feel "up" to start their "training", then if they rebel you will be able to cope with the situation without losing your cool and giving up on training.

Do you get a panicky feeling in the afternoon when you remember you have to do something about dinner and you are busy painting a row of doll's faces? Don't become a fast food junkie. It is fun at times to do fast food, but isn't always healthy or cost efficient.

Revamp your cooking habits. Find quick recipes that are nutritious, but easy to cook. Find those that can be made up and stored in the refrigerator or freezer until cooking time. Prepare enough every time you cook to have extra to freeze for another busy day.

GROCERIES

Make lists of cooking items you need when you discover you are out. It takes less time to make one trip to the store each week, then to make a trip because something you really need is gone. Have you tried shopping
