TAKING CONTROL

Oct 13, 2000 - © Barbara Massie

It's amazing how much more can be accomplished when you have control over your day. Some of the following has been written and talked about for years, but sometimes it is the obvious that needs repeated.

The to-do list helps budget your day. Plan, use self-control and know what you want to accomplish. Try to rush through what you don't like to do. Don't put something off because you dread the task, get it over with so it is off your mind.

Help! How Do I Get Started? might help you here.

Thomas Huxley said:

"Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not."

But you CAN put off until tomorrow what you could have done today, if it means better control of your day.

When you start getting behind during the day, look over the remaining list to see if all is necessary to complete. Then, if all must be done, hurry through the next item to start getting back on schedule. If you can save one item for the future to get back on schedule, mark it on your tomorrow list to think about when you write tomorrow's schedule.

"Map" your errands; this will save you time and leave you less frazzled. Map your errands by listing them, listing the time and the location. Start with the earliest appointment and work your errands from that appointment, listing them in a path that starts at home or office and circles back, but allows you to eliminate a lot of backtracking. The few seconds it takes to map your errands can cut time and save gas.

Networking has become a cliché, but the concept is good. Keeping in contact with people who you enjoy being with and from whom you can learn is necessary. It is important to spend time hearing and seeing what the world outside your workshop is all about. Make a dessert date to talk with a fellow home-based person or with a friendly competitor. You can hear what is new and even get new ideas.

John Steinbeck said:

"Ideas are like rabbits. You get a couple and learn how to handle them, and pretty soon you have a dozen."

Wearing many hats can cause stress in anyone. You have become more in control of your time and your days, but you can still feel pulled in several directions at time.
