Simple Homemade costumes for Halloween

In my search of Halloween costumes for my 3,8, and 11 year old children, I left the discount department store empty-handed. Okay, I did pick up a bag of chocolate covered pretzels but that was for me.

The prices were too high, quality low, and originality nonexistent. Luckily a friend of mine gave me some wonderful, creative costume ideas. The best part is that most of the items you need to put together these outfits, you will already have. And the few extras you don't have will only cost a few dollars.

A big thank you to Cathy Dorrah for these fun, creative, and adorable ideas!!

Highway:

You will need a plain gray sweatshirt, yellow and white electrical tape, toy cars and something to stick the cars on with. I used sticky Velcro, but I am wearing the costume to school and may need to take the cars off, double-sided tape would work just fine.

Take the tape and make yellow dashes down the middle of the shirt in the front, and tape white lines on either side like a highway. Attach the cars. Viola! I made this in 7 minutes.

Ladybug:

You need a red T-shirt (big enough to fit over a turtleneck if it's cold where you are), black felt, a red baseball cap, 2 black pipe cleaners and either some washable fabric glue or some spray-on Elmer's adhesive.

Cut 4-6 circles and a 1" (or so) line out of the felt. Glue the line in the middle of the back of the shirt, and glue circles on either side. Washable fabric glue is great if you can find it because you only have to throw it in the washer and the dots will come off in the wash. The spray adhesive, you spray on the felt and let sit for 5 minutes or so (directions should be on the back), then when it's tacky attach to the back. The pieces will peel right off later. Curl the pipe cleaners around your fingers for antennae and attach them to the hat.

Jar of Jelly Beans:

You'll need a clear plastic trash bag, some small colored balloons, a piece of paper and some markers, a hat and some tin foil.

Blow up the small balloons. Put on the trash bag (you'll have to make arm and leg holes...you might want to tape around the edges with clear packaging tape to keep the holes from getting larger), and fill it with the colored balloons. Make a sign with paper and markers that says "Jelly Beans." Cover the hat with tinfoil to make the "lid."

Scary Ghost

You'll need a very large (for the child) Plain white

Thanks for the great ideas. I think I might have to go for the highway, if I can talk my littlest one into letting me borrow her cars.

Here's a couple more ideas. I can't remember where I got the ...
