More Holiday Sweets


How can we resist? Food is a sign of love. And who doesn't love the food around the holidays. These treats are great for parties and for gift-giving. And just wonderful to have around as you're wrapping gifts and chatting with friends.

*Cinnamon-Orange Swirl Bread*
Bake several loaves of this one. It freezes well, it's great for breakfast, and wrap it in a little plastic wrap, it's great for gifts.

1/2 c. butter flavored shortening
1 c. white sugar
3/4 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
1.5 t. vanilla extract
2 c. flour
1 1/2 t. baking powder
1 t. baking soda
1/2 t. salt
1 T. cinnamon
1 t. ground cloves
1/2 t. nutmeg
2 t. grated orange peel.

Cream together shortening, white sugar and vanilla. Mix in the eggs and sour cream. Combine flour, baking powder baking soda, and salt. Mix with the shortening mixture. Pour batter into a greased loaf pan. Stir together the spices and the brown sugar. Set aside 2 T. for the topping. Sprinkle the spice mixture over the top of the batter. Cut throught with a butter knife to swirl. Sprinkle with the remaining spice mixture. Bake for 55-60 minutes in a 350 deg. oven.

*Easy Peanut Butter Fudge*
Very simple and very delicious. Looks great on a gift plate with some cookies and candied orange peel.

2 c. sugar
1/2 c. milk
1 1/2 c. crunchy peanut butter
7 ounces marshmallow creme

Butter an 8 inch square pan. Stir together sugar and milk in a saucepan. Boil for 3 minutes. Add peanut butter and marshmallow creme. Mix the ingrediants well. Pour into the buttered pan and chill well. Cut into 1 inch squares.

*Gingersnaps*
The house always smells wonderful when we make these. A holiday classic.

3/4 c. butter
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1/4 c. molasses
2 c. flour
2 t. baking soda
dash of salt
1 T. pumpkin pie spice
Additional sugar

Cream together the butter, sugar, eggs, and molasses. Stir together the rest of the ingrediants and mix into the creamed ingrediants. Mix well and chill. Roll the chilled dough into 1 inch balls and dip into the sugar. Put onto ungreased cookie sheets and back for 10 minutes at 375 deg.

*Spice Crumb Cake*
This is a dense little cake, perfect with a cup of coffee or a glass of milk after a busy morning. Don't expect it to rise up like birthday cakes, though.

1/2 c. butter
2 c. brown sugar
2 c. flour
1 egg
1 c. buttermilk
1 t. vanilla extract
1 t. baking soda
dash of salt
1 t. cinnamon
1 t. ground cloves
1 t. ginger
Whipped cream

Cream together the butter and sugar. Add flour and spices. Set aside 1/2 c. of the flour/butter mixture. To the rest of the mixture stir in the remaining ingrediants.
