Holiday Beverages

It's that time of year again - time to visit our friends and family. Keep a supply of wonderful beverages on hand to welcome your loved ones. And these are terrific changes from the normal soda pop or powdered drink mix.

Hot Beverages

When it's cold and snowy outside, a mug of something warm is a simply delicious feeling. It's a shame, though, that an entire generation of kids think that hot cocoa has to come from a little foil bag. The homemade is much nicer, and is quite easy to make.

*Hot Cocoa*

1/3 c. sugar 1/3 c. cocoa 1 c. water 5 c. milk dash of cinnamon

Mix the sugar, cocoa, and water together in a saucepan. Heat to boiling while stirring. Add milk and heat until hot. Add a dash of cinnamon and stir until smooth. Pour into mugs.

*Wassail* From that famous song.

1 gallon apple cider 2/3 c. sugar 2 t. whole cloves 2 t. whole allspice 3 sticks of cinnamon 3 dried orange peels

Place the spices in a cheese cloth sack. Pour the cider in a saucepan and immerse the sack. Simmer for 20 minutes, strain, and serve.

*Quick Irish Coffee*

1 tub whipped topping Prepared coffee Irish whiskey or brandy Granulated sugar

In the bottom of each mug place 2 teaspoons of sugar and 2 tablespoons of whiskey. Pour hot coffee into the mug and stir. Top with a tablespoon of the whipped topping.

Cold Drinks

After being on your feet all day and rushing from place to place, it can be wonderful to have a refreshing glass of something cold to drink.

*Sangria*

2/3 c. lemon juice 1/3 c. orange juice 1/3 c. sugar 1 bottle red wine

Mix everything together and serve over ice.

*Sparkling Punch*

2 quarts of a fruit cocktail (cranberry, or a cranberry blend) 1 can of a citrus concentrate (lemonade, pink lemonade, citrus punch, etc.) 32 ounces of sparkling water

Mix the fruit juices together and chill. Right before serving, add the sparkling water. Serve with ice.

*Homemade Lemonade* So much better than the powdered mix and very easy to make.

3 c. water 1 c. lemon juice 1/2 c. sugar

Mix everything together and chill. Serve over ice.
