As One Door Closes...As One Door Closes... As one door closes another opens. It’s happened to me so many times. Earlier on this year when the Suite stopped paying its writers, although I had decided to stay, I thought I would try something new. Optimism From January the 1st, I tried writing an article a day. A bit optimistic you might think? Not at all. Okay to be honest with you, I managed about half that amount - 15 articles in total. Since then, I’ve managed to sell most of them, and found good homes for the others. For example, one editor who had granted me lots of favours with regards to publishing some of my short stories, I decided to give him an article on how to write for the Internet. He published it in his newsletter, the article got a good response from readers. Online Tutoring The other thing I did was to try my hand at online tutoring. I have set up 3 writing classes: Crafting The Short Story For Beginners, Crafting The Short Story (advanced class) and Writing Therapy. I have had so much pleasure from tutoring these classes, plus made some good friends from the students. Graduation Day Also since the beginning of the year, I have gone on to graduate, being awarded my Diploma in Counselling. It was a lovely day for all the family, and a great honor for me to wear my cap and gown at last! New Job A couple of weeks after my graduation, I attended an interview for a counsellor’s post in the field of mental health, and guess what, I got the job. I’ve now been working at my new job for 3 weeks and absolutely love it! Now please don’t think I’m blowing my own trumpet, (well perhaps I am a little.) The point I’m trying to make is that when things appear to be going wrong for us, sometimes things have a way of working out for the best. Frustration Five years ago I was taking a college course and doing very well at a it. Until I got burn out that is! I had to leave the course half way through. I was so frustrated that I hadn’t achieved my goal. Yet, now I know it was meant to be. If I hadn’t left that course, I doubt I would have trained as a counsellor. I also believe that none of our experiences are wasted. Whilst on the course I learned to use a computer, previously I had been afraid of them. This led on to my purchasing one a year later, and my introduction to freelance writing.
