Slug-picking as it is called can be sort of fun. (Some folks like to squirt ammonia water at their slugs instead of actually picking them up.) Hint: If you run the sprinkler a bit in the early evening you will attract more slugs to catch during such forays.

But if you are lucky, there will be toads who will eat the slugs. Working together as a team, along with the other critters and the birds and the snakes, there may be hope. Don't get me wrong. I do not like snakes much at all (Psst! There's a SNAKE in the Garden!), but there are some benefits to them. (They eat slugs, to be exact.) So I was especially fascinated to hear the story of how St. Patrick drove all the snakes from Ireland. Does that mean they have extra slugs there now? And by any chance would slugs, Irish or domestic, prefer green beer?

Now I have it on good authority that the Irish do NOT drink it themselves. But in case you would like to experiment and don't have any leftovers for whatever reason, try this. Send yourself a virtual beer, think green and try it! Be sure to let me know how it works!

Well, I can think of ONE good thing about slugs: at least they can't fly! Need a good tagline? Go here and search for "slug"!

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Be sure to check out this month's special St. Patrick's Day 1999 Event at Suite 101.

ENJOY!
