Bewitched By Lilac: Magic Memories

In case you too want to experience the magic and plant some memories this spring, here is an example of the typical use of a lilac in a garden plan.

Lilacs are also mentioned as excellent butterfly garden plants and as useful in the water-wise or xeriscape approach to landscape and garden design.

Lilacs are a wide-ranging group. Certain lilacs are recommended for shelterbelt use. And if you are searching for a small tree, a lilac might fit the bill, too. In Minnesota, lilac qualifies as a "Proper Tree for Power Lines"; the Japanese tree lilac is currently in vogue as a possibility for specimen tree use. Check here to bone up on lilac species and their attributes.

And be sure not to miss out on some of the newer selections! Some, such as "Little Boy Blue" are diminutive enough to fit neatly into our smaller modern yards and gardens. Here are a few quick-loading photos of some of Father Fiala's other "French lilac" introductions.

Still not enough to send you on a shopping spree? Then just remember this: the true magic of lilac is in the fragrance. Fragrance Gardening will send you on your way!

ENJOY!

For example, a butterfly garden is kind of a fun activity for kids (and parents, too!). Check here for more kid-friendly topics at Suite 101!
