Did you know alfalfa isn't just for horses anymore? Not on your life!

How about some alfalfa sprouts and tiny salad greens? In case you're wondering where on earth you can snatch some fresh green matter for your diet or maybe just the thought of winter has you longing for fresh greens already -- help is at hand!

Some folks go to a certain amount of trouble to grow their own sprouts, and maybe this is part of the reason why. Another big reason might be that they're good for you -- but in truth they taste so much better when you grow them yourself and of course, the kids always enjoy finding yet another science project around the house.

So. Remember when they said broccoli seed was good for you? Just think -- now there are scads of seeds to choose from. (Think holiday gift giving here. Just pack up a few selections and a simple set of instructions and you're all set!)

Skeptical? You can do this! You can be as down-home simple and low tech or as uptown fancy schmancy as you like about it, too. Here's how:

  • The skinny on seeds in a jar

  • Illustrated jar instructions and quick reference chart for times and quantities

  • More on methods, including how to use a paper towel and when you might want a fancier set-up

  • Sample seed sprouting instructions using a commercial sprouter

  • A jar, a tube, a bag, a terra cotta dish.... or even in soil!

Some folks are very serious about their sprouts, but I'm happy to stick with the old standby's like alfalfa (Why I won't buy them at the grocery store) but I'm so lazy I'll fire up a batch and then Taa Daa! Freeze 'em!

It doesn't get any simpler than that. ENJOY!
