Herb Recipes for Eco-Gardeners: The "Real Thing"

© Barbara M. Martin

Last week I promised some "real" recipes and other stuff to help you figure out what to do with all the herbs you're growing this season, so here they are -- from the pro's no less!

First, for a fun, "quick and dirty" introduction to the world of herbs and herb cookery: the P. Allen Smith Gardens television show on KSBW in California presents Allen Smith's Gardening Tips. Lots of practical advice in sound-bite style -- try the Herb Trilogy on raised beds, and then check out the great quick and easy recipes included in the individual tips for Rosemary, Pesto, and Herb Vinegars. And don't miss the tips on lavender!

Next, for those of us who'd like a few more suggestions for fairly easy recipes to wow our friends and family and get our toes wet in the world of cooking with herbs (and many of these are make-ahead and refrigerate overnight type recipes): DIPS! These are courtesy of Gourmet and Bon Appetit magazines along with House and Garden magazine and some good cookbooks, so you know they've got to be good.

If you are a more serious cook (or a would-be serious cook) (or a cookbook fan!) and haven't found this yet, bookmark the full wonderful and searchable Epicurious Eating Recipe File.

For both guidance and personal commentaries, try the recipes from this Herbs and Spices site or perhaps the entertaining and searchable Internet Chef.

Maybe food isn't at the top of your list! If you'd rather experiment with some herbal crafts, try this excellent Guide to Potpourri and The Art of Fragrance Crafting for detailed instructions for all kinds of projects from Frontier Herbs!

For zillions of down-home style, personal tips on using, crafting and growing herbs plus lots of encouraging advice, take a good long look at Kathie's Herb Page. She has some fun projects and ideas (including edible flowers!) plus a couple of garden designs for good measure!

Finally, no discussion about herbs would be complete without mentioning garlic. Garlic is an herb most of us have at least heard of and probably eat occasionally, whether we know it or not. (When is the last time you had pizza?) So, for the off-beat among us, there is the inimitable Garlic Page. Garlic in the Garden will tell you how to grow garlic and covers interesting topics like why elephant garlic is technically a leek, but my favorite is the Fun Facts and Fiction section where you can pick up really interesting information like how long it takes garlic to kill leeches and if leeches prefer sour cream or ale. No, I'm not kidding and yes, I read the whole thing.
