Like Jack and Vera D.
Stan and Hilda, Rita, Alf,
Fred and Edna Gee.

We hated Hilda at first sight
What a nagging shrew!
And Stan was such a layabout
Just cadging his next brew.

Then the Duckies came along
Vera screaming shrill
Jack was a philanderer,
Out looking for a thrill.

How we fussed, "They've spoiled our street,
We don't need folks like these!"
But I suspect you know what's next...
We're really hard to please.

Because today if asked to choose
Our favourites; they'd be there
They took some time to grow on us
But now we hold them dear.

We've stayed through bad times, and through good
We fans from wide and far
Though people come and people go,
The street herself's the "STAR!!"

Well done Connie! A most deserving winner. Although I have to say, some of us went for the following poem, which would have been just as deserving. The judges practically tore their hair out choosing between the two.

CORONATION STREET
by adlib (Libby Seekings)

"Come Mother put the kettle on, I'm dying for a cup,
The programme's nearly starting, so I'll warm the telly up".
And all across the nation, ten million kettles heat,
Power surges through the National Grid and into every street.

Behind the lacy curtains, each television's glowing,
And outside on the highways, the mighty traffic's slowing.
The nation gathers, like a tribe, around the friendly fire,
To hear the latest episode, of which they never tire.

"And what will Elsie do tonight? And what will Ena say?"
"And who will wed and who will die and who'll be led astray?"
"And who will make us smile tonight and who will calm our fears?'
"And will we need our handkerchiefs to wipe away our tears?"

The housewives at their ironing boards, the labourers under thatches,
The Monarch in her castle (they say she even watches),
The widow in her council flat, students, professors, Peers,
The nation is united, we could watch for forty years.

I find the next poem really very touching, a wonderful tribute to an often overlooked character. A poem that Emily herself would appreciate. Excellent.

A Song for Emily

Miss Emily Nugent, Spinster of this parish
Dutiful Working girl,

Certainly not lavish .

Conscientious,
Conventional,
But Important to be Ernest!

Mrs. Emily Bishop, is a widow now
Surviving sadness,
Heartache.
Life goes on,
Filled with highs and lows.

Mrs. Emily Bishop, Landlady extraordinaire
Book keeper
Shop keeper
And Eco Warrior!

Mrs. Emily Bishop, model citizen of the Street
A Charitable,
Dependable,
Respectable
Friend to all she meets.
