Coronation Street Report Cards

Believe it or not, the year is half over, so now's the time to give out Suite101.com's mid-term Coronation Street report cards. Marks are awarded on basis of the overall effectiveness of each character. This encompasses both the actors' skill and the difficulty and importance of their role on the show. Of course, this is all purely my own personal opinion, feel free to disagree.

Let's start at the top and work our way down.

A
Natalie Barnes - Set to become one of The Street's all-time greats. Handles the tough story lines effortlessly.

Jack and Vera Duckworth - A brilliant team, both have deep, rich characters. Their roles are slowly being diminished, but they NEVER strike a false note. The show wouldn't be near as good without them.

A-
Tyrone - An instant classic character with great comic abilities, he's also shown flashes of being much more. He is only this low because he hasn't had a chance to develop as far as he will.

B+
Fred Elliot - John Savident is a terrific actor. Like Tyrone, great at comedy with flashes of much more, when the writers allow it.

Roy and Hayley Cropper - The actors are both exceptional. The only problem is that both have been shamefully neglected by the writers lately. The Amsterdam farewell scene has to be one of the top ten Corrie moments ever.

B
Betty Williams - A perfect character, but never a central one. Still, I contend that without her, the show would seem a lot less real. She's much more important than it might seem at first.

Dougie Ferguson - He's still only new, but it already looks like he'll be made into a rock solid character at the center of the drama for the next decade or so.

Leanne Battersby - If this was a few months ago, Leanne's report would be almost identical to Dougie's, but we all know she's leaving the show and it appears that the writers have completely lost interest in her. She COULD have been a great one, given a few years.

Janice Battersby, Ashley Peacock, Audrey Roberts, Blanche - They all do what they do very effectively. Well done.

Toyah Battersby - Toyah is on the bubble. Georgia Taylor has the ability if given a chance, but it could go either way. She might end up forgotten in the background or in a glorious pas de deux with Tyrone for years to come.

B-
Mike Baldwin, Linda Sykes - The introduction of the Linda character has done a lot to revive Mike's. I don't like either of them, but they're both very consistent and are very good at being unlikable.

At the moment I really enjoy Sarah-L and Candeece when they're just giggling and laughing like 2 normal teens. Just love Tyrone to bits and when he and Jack are interacting it's magic. I agree down th ...

I just love these two characters and hate to see them get left behind.

Why not make things easier for them. I would love to see them "win big" and become "somebodies" on the show. The writer(s) ...
