Coronation Street broadcasts four new half hour shows a week. Every week of every month. Every month of every year. After a while it becomes a grind. After a couple of years, you start to lose the enthusiasm you started with. Sooner or later, you start to go through the motions. There are alot of rewards, but let's face it, it takes alot of dedication. No, I don't mean for the actors or the directors or the writers or the producers, I'm talking about the viewers! No matter how much you love Corrie, and I love it alot, some weeks it begins to feel like it's a chore to have to watch every episode. And here we both are on the Internet. If you're anything like me, one of the very first things you did when you got online was to type in Coronation Street in a search engine, found some great web sites, and started to explore. You've probably participated in a few fan forums, maybe you've made some wonderful friends that way. And now, you don't dare miss a show, for fear you'd fall behind in the conversation. I remember the old days, before the Internet. Living in Canada, I didn't know any behind the scenes stories, I didn't know the first thing about the private lives of the actors and I sure didn't know any of the upcoming story lines (spoilers). Everything was fresh, new, a surprise. The only problem was that when the plots got too dramatic, it just got too tense for me, I could hardly stand it sometimes. When I first got on the internet, I LOVED spoilers, I read every single update. I didn't have to worry how it would turn out, now I knew every plot twist for the next two months. But what did I do before that? I would just stop watching. I'd miss a few weeks, then I'd pick it up again. One of the things I loved most about Coronation Street was that it didn't seem to matter. You see, I watched it for the wonderful characters, like Hilda, like Eddie, like Bet, not for the stories. And those couple of weeks off every once in a while were very refreshing. I'd just forget about it, I didn't have to worry about what was going to happen, the way you can't in real life. I thoroughly recommend it. Look, I know a lot of Corrie fans on the Internet, and a lot of them tell me that they're addicted to the show. Well, so am I. But, is that a good thing? The way I see it, an addict is someone who keeps doing something even though they don't enjoy it anymore. And an addiction is something you HAVE to do rather than something you LIKE to do.
